San Diego Comic-Con is celebrating its 50th anniversary and we’re bringing as many fun things to the party as we can! This convention is an event that we love and that has supported us in so many ways and we want to make sure that we are contributing, this and every year, to make it one of the greatest cons in Geekdom.
First of all, some exciting news: this year’s supported charity is One Love Fund! Chosen by PJ Haarsma and Alan Tudyk, the charity was created by Alan and his wife, Charissa Barton. One Love Fund is a registered 501c3 that supports projects and people who value human life, human rights, human creativity, and human progress. To date, the organization has funded programs for arts education in the US, humanitarian aid for refugees in Yemen, women's empowerment programs in Ethiopia, and will soon begin distributing funds to organizations supporting migrant children at the US border. They do great work and we are so excited to be fundraising for them at SDCC this year! EVEN BETTER: ALAN AND CHARISSA WILL MATCH EVERY DOLLAR WE MAKE WITH A DOLLAR OF THEIR OWN - how’s that for Big Damn Heroes??
That’s the who and the why, now for the what and the where! We will have two panels at SDCC this year, and while they may be familiar, they will feature some new and exciting things as well.
Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, Friday, 7/19/19, 9:15p.m. - 10:45p.m., Room: 6DE
Our Dr. Horrible screening will include a karaoke party after the film! Bring a friend and do a duet of “My Eyes,” or belt your way through “My Freeze Ray,” it’s up to you! It’s all in the name of fun and community spirit so leave embarrassment at the door! Sign ups are available during the day at our booth (A07) or you can sign up in the hallway just prior to the screening. Space and time is very limited; first come, first served.
Browncoats Meeting Room, Saturday, 7/20/19, 5:00p.m. - 6:00p.m., Room: Santa Rosa Room, Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina
Our second panel is the Browncoats Meetingroom - get the lowdown on what’s new in the verse and in our crew’s careers, and finish up the afternoon with a Firefly cosplay contest! Judges include the shows own costume designer, Shawna Trpcic (!!!!) as well as Susie Searight, con chair for Browncoat WayStation, and Chelsea Monroe-Cassel, author of Firefly: The Big Damn Cookbook! Prizes include some very fine swag, including tickets to Browncoat WayStation, signed recipe cards and more. There will be a fun participation prize for all the children who come dressed as their favorite character, so bring out all your baby Jaynes and Kaylees! Watch our social media (Twitter, IG and Facebook) for more info!
We will also be hosting an in booth signing with Shawna Trpcic on Saturday, from 3:30 to 4:30! Costume mavens, this is a chance to meet the costume designer and have something autographed by her, with the proceeds benefiting charity! Don't have anything for her to sign? We have several books at the booth that feature photos of her costumes and even early sketches and other parts of her process.
Finally, we will have a bunch of new merch for sale at the booth, as well as prizes for our charity game. All the money from our famous charity chopstick game, as well as the proceeds from merch sales, will go directly to One Love Fund! And did I mention that EVERY dollar is going to be matched by Alan Tudyk and Charissa Barton?! So go ahead and spend some credits or cashey money! JUST A FEW of the very cool things we will have available: posters, lanyards (some of which were worn by extras during filming), and comic books from Con Man, donated by PJ Haarsma and the folks at Red Bear Films. Also, another great donation from Red Bear, several copies of an album of Nathan Fillion’s personal photographs from the set of Firefly. These books are very rare and we have a limited number, so get yours fast!
You already saw our exclusive patch in last month’s post, but here it is again in case you forgot how very pretty she is. We are also going to have a small number of velcro-ready messenger and tech bags to put them on, just in case you wanna rock that patch at the con.
Other new merch includes Prophecy Girl’s “Mine’s The Nicest” parasol enamel pin, Firefly magnet sets, super cute parasol hair clip sets from Wash-O-Saurus, and laser cut Firefly pop sockets from Art of Dave. You can also still get best selling items like the Serenity Valley enamel pin, the “Aim To Misbehave" mug, and lots, lots more!
We know there’s lots of local color to see at Comic-Con, but we hope you will add our booth and panels to your must visit list - I think you’ll be pretty thrilled that you did!
